Remote Electronic Notarization Rulemaking
No NC Notary Public may perform a remote electronic notarization under the provisions of the NC Remote Electronic Notary Act (RENA) until the rules implementing the Act have been adopted and complied with. Rulemaking is in progress. For more information on RENA rulemaking, please visit sosnc.gov/rulemaking. During this interim, the Emergency Video Notarization provisions have been extended until July 1, 2025 at 12:01am.
Emergency Video Notarization Resources
Under Senate Bill 556, Emergency Video Notarization is restored until July 1st, 2025 at 12:01AM. The extension bridges the interval before NC notaries can offer Remote Electronic Notarization (REN).
Promote, Serve, and Protect Public Interests
Notaries are public officers of the State of North Carolina charged with protecting the public from fraud and forgery. The primary tools notaries use in fulfilling this statutory obligation are requiring personal appearance, positively identifying signers and recording evidence of the notarization in a journal of notary acts. Notaries have a vital role in protecting the citizens of North Carolina and facilitating commerce for those doing business in the Old North State.
