State and County Boundary relocation is the responsibility of the NC Geodetic Survey. When a county boundary is unclear, they can do a survey to relocate those boundaries, but will only do so upon the request of all affected counties, who must then adopt the surveys provided by the state.
Likewise, efforts to resurvey state boundaries must be done with the cooperation of the adjoining state. The survey and monumentation of the boundary between North Carolina and South Carolina was completed in 2016. Work toward relocating and monumenting the boundary with Virginia is anticipated to be next.
Copies of these maps are filed with the Secretary of State and are made available here.
The Geodetic Survey's County and State Mapping Program handles these functions and their website contains a status list of adopted county and state boundary resurveys.
